Alarm- I have a burglar alarm.  Does it have to be registered?  Yes, All burglar alarms must be registered with the police department.  An application form may be downloaded from this site or picked up at the Police station.  There is no charge for the registration, however there is $50.00 fine for those owners who fail to register their alarm systems.  The completed registration can be turned into the Police station.

Amber Alert- What is an amber alert?

Car (Abandoned)- There is a car on my private property, can you run the license plate and tell me who it belongs to?   If there is a vehicle on your private property that is unknown to you, call the station and request an officer.  He will get the registration to check if it is stolen.  He may give you the owner information so you may contact that person about removing it.

Car (Abandoned)- There is a car on my private property, will you come tow it away?  The Police Department will not tow abandoned vehicles from private property unless it is reported stolen or is needed for evidentiary purposes.  We will help you to identify the owner so that you may contact them to have it removed or you may contact a tow operator of your choice to have it removed.

Gaslight- What times & dates will the streets be closed?  The times and dates of street closures vary from year to year.  The most up to date info will be placed on this web site in the weeks preceding the festival.

Gaslight- When is the Gaslight festival?  The Gaslight Festival is generally held on the third weekend of September.  There are activities, (5K run, parade) that are held during the week preceding the festival on the square.

Go-cart- Are go-carts legal to ride on the street, or sidewalk?  Go-carts, scooters or any unlicensed motor vehicles are not permitted by Kentucky statute to be ridden on streets or sidewalks.

House Watch Program- How does it work?  A resident of any single family dwelling can visit the Police station and request that while they are out of town and the residence is vacant that the Police will periodically check that residence.  There is a short form to fill out that gives us information in regards to what dates the residence will be vacant, vehicles left at the residence, and emergency contact information.  This info is given to officers at the start of each shift, those officers are then responsible to see that sometime during their shift that the premises are checked at least once.  A report is sent to that resident upon their return, showing the times and dates that their residence was checked.  Houses or condos that are for sale, or have someone staying in them are not eligible for this program.  Maximum time the watch will stay in effect is thirty days.

License Plate- Where do I renew my cars license plates?  Kentucky license plates may be renewed at any Jefferson County Clerk’s Office.  The closest one in Jeffersontown is located at 10418 Watterson Trail, next to City Hall.

An operator of a moped must at least posses a learner’s permit.  In Kentucky a learner’s permit may be obtained when a person turns (16) sixteen and passes a written test.

Noise ordinance- Does J-Town have a noise ordinance? If so, what time can it be enforced? Jeffersontown does not have a noise ordinance but does enforce Louisville Metro’s noise ordinance. There is no specific time when the ordinance can be enforced but it has provisions concerning “unreasonably loud, harsh or excessive noise”.  This is defined as, “ any manufactured noise plainly audible at a distance of 50 feet from its point of origin or emanation”.
